Utada -- Adele of J-Pop
Namie -- Beyonce of J-Pop
Utada is in no way considered superior/more respected than Namie.

I'd say a lot more about her status now, but I'll refrain since there are some sensible fans of hers I don't want to offend.
Utada has dominated this year (and Namie did before her or are you delusional enough to think Ayumi was doing that up to this point?), no doubt about it. It might be a while until her next album so Namie will have it all to herself again. Meanwhile, you are free to listen to A BEST and pretend it's still 2001 all over again

Utada and Ayu have always been yin and yang. Namie has never been queen. Sure, she had her moment before Ayu debuted and scalped her career, and don't act like Kyary and Kana didn't draw just as much attention in the late 00's as Namie did.
Ayu is a cultural phenomenon and a staple of Japanese pop culture. People in the west don't even know her music, but they now who she is. She influenced music, fashion, art - she's called the Empress of Jpop for a reason.
And KII at you trying to drag A BEST when it was the #2 best-selling digital album of Japan last year - over 10 years after its release.

Now this is a ****ing joke. NAMIE THE BEYONCE OF JPOP!? WITH THAT VOICE?!
Even her stans know she isn't the best singer. Utada is absolutely more respected than Namie. That's not even up for discussion.
Utada = Adele
Ayu = Madonna
Namie = Katy
Kuu = Beyonce

Utada is easily the most respected of all the solo artists that exist It's not really a competition. That's not to say that Namie isn't respected, she definitely is.

death, get her with those A BEST receipts. That was actually a great pivot
And I agree with your first point, it's what I basically said about people dramatizing Namie's popularity. She was definitely on top for a period in 2008 but between 2009/2015 Kana, Kyary and even ayaka were scalping lowkey.

Hold up now
I heard my fav, Kana Nishino, The Digital Queen, the one that sold over 55 million records, best selling digital artist in Japan, 3rd best selling female artist in Japan behind Ayumi and Utada being mentioned in here.
Overall Utada is superior. Anyone who take this long of a break and comes back outselling every release this year is God tier

I think it's worthwhile to compare years where the three of them didn't release in the same year. Sometimes it's obvious when an artist is bigger than another, even if one didn't release
I always get salty that SCV2 sales were split over two years

What kind of lies?
How could Ayu be Madonna and Namie be Katy when Namie debuted earlier than Ayu AND outlasted her by almost a decade now? The reverse would be much closer to the truth.
As for Kumi Koda, lol you tried (and failed) even harder. Kumi was relevant for like only five years. Unlike Ayumi, she didn't last long enough to be even qualified as a nostalgia act.

If you want to look at the data, here we go:
The best selling female artist of the year
Namie Amuro: 7 times (2015,2014,2013,2012, 2011, 1997,1996)
Ayumi Hamasaki: 6 times (2000, 2001,2003, 2008, 2009, 2010)
Utada: 3 times (1999, 2002, 2004)
Kana 0
Kyary 0
The female artist that has the best selling female album of the year
Namie Amuro: 6 times (_genic, Ballada, FEEL, Best Fiction, Concentration 97, Sweet 19 Blues)
Utada: 4 times (First Love, Distance, Deep River, Single Collection Vol.1)
Ayumi: 1 time (Rainbow)
Kana: 1 time (To Love)
Kyary 0
Like, no matter how you spin it, Namie stays winning. Sorry about it.
Don't use "Utada taking breaks Namie doesn't" as an excuse. Ayumi has released like a million original album/greatest hits/remix and still topped only once. Have her stans not been so delusional I would genuinely feel bad for her.

This is a very rudimentary way of evaluating success.
If artist A was the top female for two years and artist B was the 2nd top female for 6 years, artist B is obviously more popular, despite the fact that your analysis doesn't account for that

And your supposition applies to who? If anything it makes Namie's case even stronger bc she is obviously the most consistent out of the three (consistent releasing/never flopped too hard)

So somehow Utada and Ayu and yin and yang and Namie is just a third wheel though she's far more successul than Kyary whose accepted nickname includes the word "Fad".
2012:
Uncontrolled - 517k
LOVE PLACE - 314k
PamyuPamyu Collection - 130k
2013:
FEEL - 383k
Nanda Collection - 250k
Kana released a GH so it's not fair but if we pretend her fans bought both editions twice, it's about 300k
2014
BALLADA - 431k (a GH)
with LOVE - 181k
Kyary somewhere with 80k
2015:
_genic - 246k
Kana's both collections - 196k
Sure, Kana has those digital hits but she's from a different generation and comparing Namie with her and Kyary only proves Namie's persistence as most of her own peers have fallen short.
A BEST still selling is cute, but it's an iconic GREATEST HITS collection so call me when her recent studio album makes the top 10 best-selling female solo albums of the year (note: this year she might not).
As Utada fans are getting too confortable, let me remind you that _genic had zero performances and no singles which can be fatal for a Japanese album as the people WANT TO KNOW that they are buying (hence the success of compilations in general). Fantome has had the comeback hype, big tie-in singles, performances. They both had billboards but that's a given unless you are a hasbeen who can't afford them
