Hilary Duff interview w/ Forbes; talks music, Younger, etc.
Music parts bolded:
Quote:
For several years Hilary Duff played the title role on the beloved TV series Lizzie McGuire. Her part as the awkward middle schooler made her a star. But towards the end of the run she knew that her proverbial wheelhouse contained more. “I felt so grateful to be on the show and it opened so many doors for me and taught me so much,” says Duff. “But I was ready not to be Lizzie McGuire anymore. I thought, I’ve got to be different than this.”
Guided by those principles she made some bold moves which also proved to be wise ones. She began a successful recording career. Now an established singer and songwriter, last year she released her fifth studio album “Breathe In. Breathe Out” which became her fifth top five album to climb the charts. “I had never really sang before and didn’t know exactly what I was doing. But it felt necessary and I was very motivated,” says Duff. ” My music career is different than it was. I’m still trying to figure out exactly how it fits into my life being a mom, doing Younger and trying to have some kind of a life outside of that too.”
Reinvention also attracted Duff to take on the role of smart and genuine go-getter Kelsey Peters in the TV Land show Younger. Created by Darren Star, the force behind Sex and the City, the hit series is in its third season and was renewed for a fourth. “I liked idea of reinventing yourself and doing whatever it takes to take care of yourself and your family,” she says. “The show is obviously a comedy. But the relationships between the women are all very real. It’s about friendship, which is beautiful. And we get to have a lot of fun. The show is also very cutting edge and shocking.”
Brunner: What advice would you give women who are getting out of college, starting their careers and taking that next step in their lives, but may not feel confident?
Duff: I’ve had such a different upbringing than girls who went to college. This last time when I got into the studio, I hadn’t made a record in about seven years. I had been married, had a child, and then got divorced. A lot was happening in my life. But I really wanted to sing, I wanted to make a record. I obviously wanted to be proud of it. But I didn’t have any direction where I wanted to go. I just wanted to start the process. When I started writing the phrase I always told myself was, just dare to suck. When you have an idea, you have to dare to suck because it might be awesome. Or it might suck. Young people should remember that.
There’s always so much pressure to succeed and be at the top. But you might not always get it right the first time. You have to continue to be bold and put yourself out there. Even if your first job might not be your dream job. It opens up doors to hopefully be where you want to be. Or maybe it will take you in a totally different direction that might be really good for you.
