Kinda, yeah. But that goes for pretty much every artist that dies prematurely. People assume the best case scenario of your hypothetical future career (ie: she'd have the same career trajectory as Beyonce, who would currently be flipping burgers in McDonalds), rather than the less glamorous, more likely scenarios (she'd be where Brandy, Monica, Mya, Amerie, Ashanti, Ciara, etc) are today. She was influential, and is somewhere on the lower end for Icon status, but it is true that people sometimes do way too much, especially when her fans suggest Bey, Rih etc wouldn't exist and/or wouldn't be successful if she didn't die (Bey) or without her influencing them (Rih).

A R&B legend borderline icon.
He lost his pop relevancy and as a artist overall.

A legend in R&B is still a legend, no?
And R. Kelly is more than just an "R&B Legend" if you were talking about him.

girl just like you said. WE DON"T KNOW. It could be possible that Aaliyah could be on beyonce level right now or she could be in brandy situation. Either way WE don't know. BUT what we do know that Aaliyah was signed to star in two of the biggest movies of her generation (Matrix and Matrix 2) which could open her up to a new audience. She was booked with movies till 2008. so Aaliyah wasn't ever going to be out of work.

tbh No one knows who she is, IDK why ATRL acts like she was someone.

Janet even wanted to collaborate with her . Also because Aaliyah was never a huge mainstream artist like a mariah she's not a legend Pop girls like katy and gaga have sold more records than aretha yet she's still highly respected. If accolades, impact and influence doesn't make somebody a legend. what does

None of that makes an artist a legend. Stop subscribing to the "legend" criteria set by ATRL. What makes an artist a legend is how their art has advanced pop culture, in respect to music. For example: Aretha is a legend because she is the epitome of singing, The Beatles are legends because they conceptualized the album as an art form, Jimi Hendrix is a legend because of the sound effects he created with the guitar. If you were to remove these artists' contributions, the effects drastically affect the sound of music. With Aaliyah, you don't really get that.

Legend is a tricky word. Would I put Aaliyah up there with MJ, Whitney, etc? Not really. But I wouldn't put any of her peers there either. The 90's produced many icons (and she's definitely in the higher tier of them) but the industry was too saturated to spawn any legends, plus, like you said, her genre wasn't mainstream and she didn't even get to reach her commercial prime. This is like the "is Usher a legend?" thread. It's a tricky word.
I don't really care to call her something at this point. I don't know if she's a legend, I just care that she does have a legacy, especially within her audience. Even these days, when a new r&b girl comes up, Aaliyah is always brought up. So, it's not just a matter of whether a couple of her songs or a specific album is remembered, it's her essence, her whole thing. She left her mark. And to be remembered without your music being up for purchase and streaming (@Attitude) is difficult.
|
This is why Aaliyah isn't really a legend, but rather an icon. She's not an artist that truly transcended her genre, and her contributions within the genre really aren't significant. She created a lane that worked for her, not one that could work for others.
And Usher isn't a legend.

Musically no. Status wise, a bit. I don't think she was a legend of her time but she definitely had influence.

A cute fad, popular for a brief moment in the US = a legend now?

wrong, she was highly respected and heralded in the R&B/urban music scene. y'all can't seem to wrap your heads around the fact that genres outside of pop music exist in the world
and the nerve of you to make this thread with a cassie inspired username when she herself was directly influenced by aaliyah
