Sydney is so damn expensive and traffic is insane. I recently flew down there for work; my workmates and I arrived like two hours late because there was so much traffic. The worksite wasn't even that far from the city
Weather (have been to both cities in every season...): Sydney wins
Food: Both have excellent restaurants and but Sydney wins because it has more.
Beaches: Need I say it? Sydney wins
Harbour: Sydney wins. Melbourne tried to copy Sydney with the Docklands...it failed. It is boring, the shops open and close all the time.
Historical architecture: Sydney
Shopping: Sydney
Affordability: Melbourne prices are almost the same as Sydney...the thing is they don't have the amazing harbour Sydney has and that's why people have the idea that prices in Sydney are dearer. Many years ago perhaps Melbourne was cheaper in general...but they should be about the same now.
Safety: Funnily enough, Sydney is safer than Melbourne....have a look at the statistics. Also there are a lot of beggars in Melbourne city, something that should be dealt with.
Aside from all the sports, Sydney has lots of cultural activities, a crazy amount of good food to eat (a lot of it surprisingly affordable), amazing beaches and is easier to get around.
and Gaga's been doing surprising well here too... I live!

These Sydney (aka mortgage central) hennies need to stop trying it... Apart from the beaches and weather Melbourne is superior (Melbourne has some nice beaches too tho)
Melbourne is the sporting capital of the world, and the city is so much better than Sydneys city. Plus nobody cares about the Harbor Bridge and the Opera house after you've seen them once
