This is a pretty good mantra for pop musicians to hear. Katy's problem is that she falls overwhelmingly into the latter category.

she is basically saying she will find a balance of both things. She will not bee too artsy and alienate her core fan base and yet she will not create her art only based on chart success. It's a nice quote to go by.
