@ohplease: I agree with everything in your "essay" except that new artists introducing new styles doesn't exist anymore. you used MJ, The Beatles, Madonna, and Britney (along with Xtina, you should've mentioned) as examples, but the truth is, in the last 10 years more artists have done it too. Beyonce and Rihanna have given light to women of hispanic descent to have big pop careers with their vocals, in a decade where any type of racial discrimination was high, and still is obviously. Ke$ha, Lady GaGa, and Katy Perry are all bringing something new to the table with their controversial image, including their videos and song lyrics. GaGa brought a new type of fashion and style to us through her wardrobe and her music videos, reminding us of how highly respected a form of art the music video should be, which MJ proved in the 80s. Katy Perry brought to us a sexy mysterious image with provocative lyrics of sexual curiosity. Ke$ha has had instant success as plain and simple: a carefree party girl, an image that's been lacking for a while with more serious artists. Her personality is as catchy as her radio smashes.

Plus, outisde the US she couldn't use all those tactics to chart high and hit no1 with her singles. 49 cents physical singles or sometimes for free, payola, repressed downloads etc She is the most successful US chart manipulator of all time though. She and her hubby back then.
