they (Epic) also blocked Avril from doing more rock sound on her last album. They just want artists to create commercial pop music without doing anything risky

Urban isn't here for them, so why go that direction?

Epic is a label, they wanna make money. Female R&B is just not happening right now, other than Bey and Rih. Even artists who have been grinding for years, accumulating an r&b core fanbase, like Kehlani, Tinashe and Sevyn, get no support. So, OF COURSE the label won't let them make r&b. And it's not like their current music is completely bubblegum, it's crossover

I guess they can have a few r&b album tracks, but when you're a manufactured artist (this isn't shade, they were technically put together by others, so...) it's hard to demand creative control, unless you pull HUGE numbers that force the label to listen to you and cater to your artistic needs. Kind of messed up, but it's the way it is

There are like two successful R&B girls (Beyonce and Rihanna), outside of that, the girls trying R&B are achieving absolutely no success. Smart decision by Epic.

Rihanna is not, wasn't and never will be an R&B girl. If she was, she would have had five or six hit singles in the mid 2000s and dropped off the face of the earth like all the others.

!!! If anything, Rihanna is more Hip-Hop than pure R&B. All of her Urban tracks have rap features or are straight up Hip Hop tracks. She doesn't do R&B.

Are Rih and Bey really RnB girls tho? Their sounds blend too many different genres to be considered RnB imo.

Beyonce is more of an R&B girl, but genre-wise she's like Michael and Janet, where everything has an R&B flavor mixed with pop, funk, electronic, etc. But Rihanna is straight up Pop or ratchet Hip-Hop tracks.

Can't blame them. It's sad they can't do what they want to do
