You can't even deny it. How many shows/movies reference Star Wars? Tons and tons. It's part of the popular vernacular.
All That did a Harry Potter parody and it was mentioned once on The Big Bang Theory and Psych. But sayings from it haven't penetrated the mainstream tongue. It's just still fresh and popular.
And I hate Star Wars. Never watched a single movie. But I know EVERYTHING about it because of the utter saturation. Look how many times Family Guy have done Star Wars.
That's false. I don't even watch/know many TV shows but off the top of my head I can think of the "Henry Skreever" books on Arthur and that wizarding school on Wizards of Waverly Place. It's referenced everywhere.

I like Harry Potter more, but voted Star Wars. It literally changed films and inspired future film makers, it changed films forever. And it's still relevant decades later. You can only call something an icon if it did what Star Wars has.
But this is ATRL, they would call someone who's been popular for only a few months in the music industry an 'icon'.
Most people on here are the generation that grew up with Harry Potter so that's why it's winning. However It's hilarious that people are calling Harry Potter multi-generational and saying Star Wars is not when it's the complete opposite .
Star Wars has been going for 40 years and has attracted a whole new generation of fans with The Force Awakens, as well as retaining it's original fanbase from decades ago. Even the prequel trilogy from the 90s/early 2000s - despite it being critically panned - introduced the Star Wars universe to tons of people and were a commercial success.
Harry Potter is mostly only revered by the generation that grew up with it, if any of the franchises are multi-generational it's Star Wars.
Star Wars is bigger in every aspect except book sales, which makes sense obviously since Harry Potter started as a novel.
And in fact the Harry Potter movies are directly impacted by Star Wars, the special effects in HP come from Industrial Light & Magic (created by George Lucas the director of SW and pioneered in the Star Wars movies). So without Star Wars, Harry Potter wouldn't even have its special effects.

Star wars is iconic, But so is Harry Potter. And it will be passed down through generations just like star wars. Harry Potter is not going to go away and it will keep inspiring children to read for a very long time. They're both multi billion dollar franchises and both will continue being multi generational classics. But you are definitely wrong about Harry potter only being treasured by those who grew up with it. I've seen countless people young and old reading the books and watching the movies. Hell, my mother is over 60 and loves Harry Potter. And she loved star wars too. In all honesty I don't even think they should be compared because Star wars came out 20 years before HP did.
