And "respect" is one of many socially constructed social mores determined by various factors, so you admit Muslim people are purposefully deemed disrespectful while anglo-christian European acts of disrespect are normalized in Europe?
Shame Christian and Anglo-extremists think the answer to oppressive regimes in the Middle East is oppressive laws in their own lands. A complete failure similar to tone-deaf 2nd-wave feminism.
yes, respect is a social contruct, but the issue at hand was discriminatory reasons behind why someone rejects showing respect based on person's gender.
europe has destroyed too many cultures already. no one anymore today has to keep up with the western standard
Social equality is standard-issue all around the world except muslim communities. It should be a global standard and efforts need to be made to change the parts of the world where people are maligned for their sex, skin color or sexual orientation.
It's not the western standard as much as it is part of human rights.

Social equality a global standard? Really? Even the first world countries in Europe and US still have huge issues with it hun.
An effort to change those parts of the world? Havent we seen such actions recently? Oh yeah, lets see... the West caused several military conflicts and regime changes in the ME these past 15 years. The result? Rise of extremism and anti-Western sentiment as the Western powers carpet bombed Afghanistan, created political vacuum and civil war in Libya, support and fund the most puritanical wahhabist country aka Saudi Arabia and Saudi Arabia then uses the US made weapons to fund ISIS in Syria and Iraq and bomb civilians in Yemen and so on and on.... so, you were saying???
Oh really? I havent noticed that social equality in Europe much, hun. We still have issues.

Hold it, I never said I agreed with the military actions in the Middle East. I think the change needs to be cultural and not forced upon the people by brute force. It will take a lot of time for that to happen, but I think the best course of action is to expose them more to the Western lifestyle and make them want to adapt to it without bombing their homes.
I know Europe doesn't have full social equality but we're getting there steadily.

we can thank Bush and people who voted for him for that mess

If Muslim women don't feel as though their culture is particularly misogynistic in comparison to western culture in which women are objectified, and an ideal female body is built up in the public consciousness and used to sell things, and that they don't feel the hijab as a means of repressing their individuality, but preserving it from what they see as the petty judgements of others, and that not having to have bodily contact with a man other than those fromtheir immediate family is not particularly sexist but rather as a sign of modesty and respect, who are we to say otherwise? Majority of the world see the above culture as backward and oppressive because they lack knowledge and understanding of Islamic philosophy behind it as they're viewing and judging it by the western cultural standards which has been erected through colonialism as the de facto global modern standard that everyone has to abide by.

women have a choice of showing their skin or being covered in Western world, muslims women don't have that privilage in majority of their countries. Should we bring up the fact a brother murdered his own sister for posting pictures on Instagram from this year?

Iran is oppresive because they execute gay people. I'm sure Iranian gays would think Western culture is better than theirs about gay rights.

Collect them.
For all the preaching about European & Western standards, people sure seem to ignore the purposeful fanning of flames and instigation / creation of extremism in the Middle East that Europe and most of the West tries to create.
It's almost like people can't theorize the Middle East would be so much more forward and progressive socially and culturally if they didn't experience decades of intervention, regime-change and political exploitation; all of which can occur between countries in the ME itself, but Western powers with more pull coming in and triggering such is no help and often some of the worst causes.

I partly agree, every culture evolves and progresses at different speed, and the best we can do is to not interfere. They just need a lil more time to adjust their centuries old traditions. Look at us, where we and our human rights were just a few decades ago? Its only 90 years since women were allowed to vote, 50 years since racial segregation was abolished and totalitarian regimes fell in past few decades in most of Europe. In historical context, these changes are very very recent.
I disagree, though, with the part about adapting to Western lifestyle, thats nonsense. You dont need to follow the western lifestyle in order to make social progress. And as we have seen, the western way of life doesnt work for them anyway. And why should they, when they already have their own incredibly rich culture which they can develop and build upon.

I agree with that, but I think he was mentiong the fact that these cultures discriminate against people in a way secular countries do not and protect and give equal opportunity to all regardless of their gender, race, sexuality, etc. etc.
Iran was like this before 1979 when Islam took over the country
I have the most respect for Iran's youth because they seem to be the most progressed middle eastern society! that is what happens when you give people actual freedom and then you want to took it away from them. They will rebel out against their islamic goverment. They realize how secularity is imortant because their parents teached them about the old Iran unlike other middle eastern countries that teach quran as a way of living life. With that being said, Iran is still very homophobic but at least tends to treat women better and more equal than other muslim-majority countries.
Iran was like this before 1979 when Islam took over the country
It was the most secular and socially advanced middle eastern country
SAD, tbh.
Egypt was as well. Girls wearing short skirts were seen everywhere in Cairo, now...
This is not religion's fault though, it's extremism. When the bad guys are in power I know a lot of people in Iran and Saudi Arabia wish for a more open society but they can't do much about it
