This same logic is applied to iPhone 7 since there's very rare cases of it, so I'm not the only one who's grasping at straws here. However, one thing I have to question is how does a phone that's not even turned on blow up in the mail?

After all, when you buy a phone directly from Apple, the phone is always turned off. Edit: The battery could have been possibly at fault - it also could have been the mail carrier. I imagine the box dropped on the ground while in transit and was hit in direct sunlight and probably put in a hot room. It does say it was punctured beyond just the heat. With all that mixed together, it probably didn't help.
