Jason DeRulo Makes History On Pop Songs Chart
Jason Derulo accomplishes a first on Billboard's Pop Songs radio airplay chart, as he becomes the first solo male to notch consecutive No. 1s with his first two entries in the survey's 17-year history.
Derulo's "In My Head" rises 3-1 on the tally in its 17th chart week, becoming his second leader. "Whatcha Say" began a four-week reign on the chart dated Nov. 28, 2009.
The songs, both of which he co-wrote, appear on Derulo's self-titled debut album, which has sold 92,000 copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan. The 20-year-old Miami-born singer performed his new No. 1 on "American Idol" last Wednesday (April 7).
Nine previous male soloists had topped the chart with their first entries: Shawn Mullins ("Lullaby," 1998), Eagle Eye Cherry ("Save Tonight," 1998), Ricky Martin ("Livin' La Vida Loca," 1999), Lou Bega ("Mambo No. 5 (A Little Bit Of...)," 2000), Gavin DeGraw ("I Don't Want to Be," 2005), Chris Brown ("Run It!," 2005), Ne-Yo ("So Sick," 2006), Flo Rida ("Low," 2008) and Jay Sean ("Down," featuring Lil Wayne, 2009).
Until this week, however, no male artist had duplicated his initial chart dominance with a follow-up No. 1 in a second chart appearance.
Billboard's Pop Songs chart, which is powered by monitored airplay data provided by Nielsen BDS, originated in October 1992.
