GGGB although 1989 was bigger in the US, GGGB was more successful on a global scale. Umbrella is one of the songs that defined the 2000s even being in the rolling stone list of 500 best songs of all time. GGGB ultimately was more memorable but I'm not taking away from the 1989 era because it was huge as well.

And to add to this, 1989 outdid GGGB in ALL of North America, which includes Canada and Mexico. As well as Oceania (Australia + NZ). So all GGGB has over 1989 is Europe and I guess Latin America, for whatever that's worth.

Who cares. "Globalness" is such an overrated, contrived metric. The important point is how many units are moved, not their ratios between different countries.

Selling 10m copies of an album anywhere will ALWAYS be more impressive -- and successful! -- than selling 5m spread evenly throughout different markets.
