He can't back out. Aside from the fact that he's an egotistical narcissistic megalomaniac who cannot accept defeat, the fact is that it's simply too late. Deadlines have passed, ballots are printed, absentee / early voting has started.
As for the timing, this is exactly
why it's called an October surprise. A last-minute event that influences the outcome of an election when it's too late to change or remove a candidate.
