I don't think corporal punishment is effective and so is cruel and basically useless, but punishment (although not as effective as reinforcer-based learning) in general is acceptable if you want

Yes. Discipline needs to be taught. A gentle "hit" on the hand when the child is not capable of having proper conversation/understanding, formal conversation and punition after that

I would physically punish my daughter because she will need to learn to be humble and respect her future husband.

I wouldnt hit my son because then he'll grow up and beat me up. Instead I would use material punishments like giving his allowance to his sister

Right? I was such a bad child. I would hit the other kids. Then one day my mom came to school. She took me to the front of the class, pulled my pants down and spanked me in front of the entire class.

What are you guys talking about? Physical punishment is one of the most effective corrective tools a parent can use. Kids HATE the feeling of being spanked because the effects are instant ,uncomfortable and painful. Kids can eventually get used to time-outs, having toys taking away, discussions, but they will never get used to a spanking, which is why the threat of a spanking is likely the best deterrent of bad behavior. It's what separates the kids that throw tantrums in the store despite their parents plea for them to stop from the kids that don't or stop shortly after being threatened with a spanking. Spankings do work.

It should be noted that there is a difference between a spanking and child abuse, though many parents' idea of a spanking is really child abuse.
