HBO (amongst other cable stations) seems to be more sensible about it though, to be fair.

Don't even. The quality of friends did dip in the later seasons but it still was a great show - which is why it remains one of the most ionic/best loved American sitcoms.
Big Bang Theory on the other hand is a good example of a show that is running (and will run) for a very, very long time, despite it's awful awful quality.
British shows tend to end on a high, instead of dragging them out for several more seasons for the coins. You'll find very few British shows going beyond a handful of seasons, the only real exceptions being soap operas + Doctor Who.

Although it's based on a movie, I guess it would be hard to continue it so really this is just "The Evil Dead 2" in a long movie broken apart by short interval breaks...
