A trial has been set for the 14-year-old Virginia boy charged with stealing a 65-cent carton of milk.
Ryan Turk was slapped with petit larceny for swiping the drink from the Graham Park Middle School cafeteria, even though he was enrolled in his former school’s free lunch program.
Ryan, who is now a high school freshman, was also charged with disorderly conduct when he refused to go to the principal's office after the incident.
The teen turned down an offer of nonjudicial punishment through a diversion program, opting to to go through a criminal trial instead in November, according to the Washington Post.
That's good. If he stole a carton of milk, he's likely to steal other stuff in the future. Set the youth straight! Also, he seems like he wants to act like a lil thug, he could've just gotten away with it with a principal's note. That idiot deserves the trial

It sounds more like he chose to go to trial because he refused to accept the punishment the normal way... Sort of his fault.
He is on trial because he refused to say he did it, because according to him he did not steal the milk

His family chose to go to trial to prove the boy's innocence:
Ryan, who is now a freshman in high school, was enrolled in his middle school's free lunch program.
“My son is not going to admit to something he did not do,” Ryan's mother, Shamise Turk, told the paper.
The charges stem from an incident on May 10, when Ryan was pulled out of the lunch line by a school officer who spotted him taking the milk carton.
The teen reacted in frustration after the officer handled him roughly, according to local reports.
Shamise Turk said she reviewed surveillance footage that shows Ryan did not attempt to conceal the carton of milk. (WTVR)
Police said Ryan was charged with larceny for attempting to “conceal” the milk and then was suspended from school for being uncooperative with school officials and for using his cellphone on campus
So he was enrolled in the free lunch program, and he goes on trial for making use of that program?
It seems to me the school is just unable to admit their own mistake and is taking this way too far.

“No one needs to be punished for stealing a 65-cent carton of milk,” Emmet Robinson, a lawyer representing the family told the Post. “This officer treats kids like they’re criminals, and guess what happens—they’re going to become criminals.”
