last Tuesday we had a class dedicated to "BORN THIS WAY"* the phrase not necessarily the song

we discussed that are we born this way? or do we use the phrase as a broad term for "as long as I remember"? or is it just a term we use to in a sense politicize our sexuality.

or that for some people they just experimented and such and can they say " born this way"

and if in fact we are "born this way".. it wasn't in the sense that something went wrong with us.. more of in the way that are we just born and are automatically sexualized in a sense

it was a very touchy subject since most of us in the class are in the LGBT community

we all came to the conclusion that the term BTW is a very broad thing, for everyone has their own story of why they say that etc.

anyways when we spoke about BTW a lot of people were getting mad because they said gaga wasn't gay and she was appropriating gay culture just like Macklemore or how every you spell his name
and some of us spoke out how she says she's bisexual and even if she wasn't it was nice to have allies or people who write songs like this for us

I've always had an attraction for men ever since I was a child. It wasn't sexual, I didn't know what sex was obviously but it was still an attraction. So I'll go with the born this way wagon.

I don't really know how to explain this in a way that makes sense, but I'll try...

You know how in the Born This Way video, Gaga says "the birth wasn't finite, it was infinite" in the prologue? I've always thought that that was a really subtle way of taking both sides of the nature/nurture argument. Everyone hears the phrase "born this way" and interprets it as "came out of the womb queer," but the idea of birth being infinite (rather than a singular fixed event) suggests that the process of being born (ie: becoming who we are) is never-ending, meaning that even if we are not literally born queer, it's still a natural development. Idk. I'm probably being stupid and over-analytical.


Anyways, the big difference between Born This Way and Same Love is that Gaga wrote an empowerment anthem for queer people, while Macklemore wrote a song about queer people that tries to explain gay rights to straight audiences.

I wasn't born gay. I believe I had a genetic predisposition, but my environment definitely played a role. Just like you can be genetically predisposed to develop obesity, but you still have to eat all the food to get there.
