He didn't criticise gays who are "stereotypical", simply that it's very much welcome that we see the opposite. Both because the constant niave assumption from straights (and dome gays) that gay/straight must equal certain characteristics is tired as F*** but also because tons of people in these kind of spaces (sports) or who don't fit in line with the predominant gay cultural scene are the ones who sometimes find it most difficult to come out. (this guy is 40!)
This isn't a competition of oppression either, as a gay man who isn't assumed by many to be gay, so much of the battle is internal and trying to fit in line with people's expectations. Had I had more role models & representation I would have been accepting of myself a lot sooner.
