Proper names like Beyonce & Madonna added to Scrabble
Quote:
Worldwide Pop Icons, Beyonce and Madonna both proper nouns with celebrity wattage will now be permitted on the boards of the popular word game Scrabble.
The arrival of proper nouns signals the first change to Scrabble since the game was introduced 62 years ago, the UK Sun reports.
Players will be allowed to spell words backwards and upwards and to start a new word that is not connected to words already on the board. Some Scrabble devotees, meanwhile, charged the changes would add up to 'dumbing down' the game.
Mattel called the change a 'great new twist' on the old formula. A Mattel spokeswoman said: 'These changes are the biggest news for Scrabble lovers in the history of the game. The layout, colours of the board and rules have remained unchanged over the years. We believe that people who are already fans will enjoy the changes and younger players will also get involved.'
More than 150 million Scrabble sets have been sold worldwide since 1948.
