Thinking back, Kacey Musgraves was nominated in 2014 despite self releasing 3 albums and a major label album, so unless the rules have changed since then I don't think that would be a factor

Hmm, this is really the only thing I could think of. Although Vessel came out January 2013 and wouldn't have even been eligible for the 2013 Grammys (unless the years you're counting are nomination years and not award years)
And I don't think Heathens really has the power to win like SO would
