I feel like it happens because they don't have a
real standard for what qualifies as Lead vs Supporting, so it's just a free-for-all that comes down to who gets campaigned as what.
Like, Kate Winslet won Lead Actress at the Oscars and Supporting Actress at the Golden Globes with the same role. Anthony Hopkins (Lambs) and Anne Hathaway (Miserables) had the almost exactly the same amount of time onscreen, but he won Lead Actor and she won Supporting Actress. One commentator has said that Viola Davis will campaign as Lead for Fences, but a less-famous actress would have been campaigned as Supporting.
Should Lead vs. Supporting be determined by the amount of screentime one has? By the number of scenes they're in? By where they ranked on the film's billing (ie: top billing = lead)? By their relative significance to the film's story? By how other award ceremonies classify the performance? By the actor's reputation / prestige / salary? Idk, man.
