The pair are kicking off their efforts with a $600 million investment in creating the BioHub, a lab to be located in San Francisco's Mission Bay neighborhood that will bring together engineers and scientists from Stanford, Berkeley and UCSF. There, they will work on creating tools that can be used to find cures for all diseases.

"The more people who believe we can cure all diseases in our children's lifetime, the more likely we are to get our government to invest in it. And then the more likely it is to actually happen," Zuckerberg said. "We need your help, and it's an area where we can all do something really important together."

I mean, it kind of is (although this is coming from someone with a ton of faith in medicine). On the surface it isn't, but we have to take a deeper look. We've made serious advancements in a lot of big diseases over the last few decades. With more funding and people like the Zuckerberg's stepping up, a lot more than people think can be done.

Good luck with that. The pharmaceutical industry would never allow it, disease and illness is one of the most profitable businesses in existence. They aren't giving up their billions that easily.

Also if they are going to test on animals then they can keep it, no need for that barbarism.

I read Mark's post on fb, and as a medical student who has a lot of faith in science, I am willing to believe in them.

First of all, they said something along the lines of 'we want to achieve this in our kids' lifetime'... They are smart people and they are aware that it won't happen overnight. And I do think that in the next 60-80 years, we'll have incredible amounts of developments in the world of medicine.

Second of all, if they choose wisely on which diseases they want to focus on, which to me sounds like they do, with the funds and the exposure they have, they can easily make a real change.

Now is such an exciting time as well.. I mean with CRISPR-Cas there's so much potential to find treatments quickly.

I do hope some funding will go to antibiotic research though.. that stuff is an ongoing problem that we've got to get back on top of or people are going to start dying from infections again.

we don´t need overpopulation on this Earth tho, but we need to find ways to make this planet fully habitable and green despite that happening. maybve a 1 Child policy and exterminate poverty is a best solution

tbh, altho all the Money in the World won´t make the main mecanisms behind the greenhouse effect and waste/poison in our Environment stop

The way you would do it is by making people immune to the disease presumably. Curing disease is one thing but making people immune to the disease is another. That's what happens with the flu shot. It makes you immune to the flu. This is also why you can't completely get rid of things like HIV. It relies on the medication coming in contact with the HIV to kill it off. What needs to happen is a way for the body to be able to resist HIV long term which is what the current crop of HIV medications do in the short term. You take a pill and it makes your immune system resist the HIV.
