Well known british cult magazine i-D just published an article in anticipation of Gaga's 5th solo studio album Joanne. It elaborates on the 'imperial phase' in the context of Gaga's new gutsy direction, her latest single Perfect Illusion.
Quote:
Where once we believed the singer as an infallible pop entity, we now question her choices. A disco-inspired guitar part over three years after Get Lucky? A belter of a chorus in a post-Lean On world of restraint (that has the audacity to arrive 30 seconds in, no less)? It's hard to imagine this suddenly blinking, flinching Gaga having the temerity to turn up to the MTV Video Music Awards wearing a dress made of raw beef (in fairness, it's hard to imagine anyone in today's gimmickless pop climate turning up to the MTV Awards in a dress of raw beef). As the cracks in her voice denote, she seems fallible, human. Could it all have been an illusion?
I hope she ends her contract and signs with an indie label. Then it would really be #MusicNotTheBling and not just a hashtag to make her seem more relatable or as if she is a better artist.
Then there would be no more "Lady Gaga is over" talk, because then I feel like she'll be just irrelevant enough that ATRL won't really talk about her, but she'll still be relevant enough to tour theaters.
Gaga achieved so much that artists try to achieve in their entire lifetime. Now it's time to go the Beyonce route and cement her artist integrity (but hopefully with successful singles included)
In just 7 years Gaga has achieved EVERYTHING. Topped forbes, sold millions of albums and songs, successful tours, #1s, grammys, VMAs, ICONIC moments I could go on forever
