He didn't say he wanted a trend-chasing album. He just said that she'd need to go in that direction for an undeniable hit, like Bieber did with Purpose. Which is indisputably a fact. "Perfect Illusion" is not hit material, whether you think it's the highest quality release she's ever done or not. And it's likely that the rest of the album will follow suit in that regard.
Which, hey, if that's what she wants from this record, then that's fine. But so far, the direction she seems to want to go in just doesn't look to be very commercially compatible. And to expect anything more will just lead to disappointment. Just let her do what she wants. That's all anyone here can do.
