Annabelle had a couple of cool sequences (the elevator for instance) but I personally wasn't the biggest fan overall. If Annabelle 2 had been a straight up sequel to that I wouldn't have wanted to do it. This one is more of it's own thing.

What happened was that New Line and James Wan were so happy with Lights Out that they offered me Annabelle 2. At first I was hesitant because I wasn't the biggest fan of the first one but I really liked the script (which isn't a continuation of the first film, it's something different). So there were a lot of reasons to do it.

I agree though, the first Annabelle wasn't really... My type of film. Which is partly why I agreed to direct the second one, no fanboy anger over me potentially ruining a classic :-)

I really enjoyed Lights Out and his short films, and he apparently knows what mistakes they made with Annabelle, so I'm excited for the sequel, even though I didn't really enjoy the first one.
