Moving away from the setting of Hope's Peak Academy featured in previous games, New Danganronpa V3 takes place at a prison school known as "Gifted Inmates Academy" (才囚学園 Sai-shū Gakuen?). Players control a girl named Kaede Akamatsu who, along with several other inmates, has become trapped inside the school by the evil Monokuma and forced to participate in a mutual killing game.
The game continues the same style of gameplay as the first two Danganronpa games, in which the player must participate in Class Trials to determine who among their fellow students murdered one of their own.[4] In addition to the previous mechanic of using Truth Bullets containing evidence to shoot through contradictions that come up during discussions, the player will occassionally need to to use lies in order to defeat opponents.[2] The game features updates to the Nonstop Debates, in which players may have to listen to multiple testimonies at once
