Is the notion of "not caring about the charts" as a pop star safe? Obviously the music should come before anything else, but saying you don't care about the charts relieves you of the risk of backlash and criticism you'd receive as you aim for the top, specifically for a pop star. Any of the millions of artists in the world can solely make music they feel like making, but only a select few can be on the top. It's safe to stay content/ in the level you're at than to reach for legend status, which can be a scary/difficult/risky journey.

To be honest, I'm tired of these pop stars thinking they're already at the top. Only Taylor actually challenges to top herself continually.

Yes, it's safe. But it's a concept that you chart-stans will never be able to grasp.

You will never understand how a musician, famous or not, might actually want to make the music that dwells in their heart rather than the music that dwells on the charts.
And this is because you're projecting your own need for success and approval from the outside world onto the artists you're paying attention to, who (thankfully) aren't governed by such unfortunate insecurities, and the resulting dependency to being liked by the masses.

But the thing is, literally anyone can make music that dwells in their heart. And not to say there isn't an audience for this. But the real risk/challenge is becoming a legend. And no one is stopping the artist from making what they want to make, but pop stars who strive for the top should shouldn't dedicate their music career around music that won't benefit their career.

And no @ projecting my own need for success and approval. Is that your own personal issue? I like it when things get interesting in the pop world. It's like sports. Pop stars content at where there at are safe and killing the fun.

No, by challenging herself and changing things up to be on top. The same applies to previous legends Michael Jackson, Mariah Carey, etc. They all challenged themselves and were never content with their success until after multiple decades into their career.
