I never understand the concept of work and money how did it come about? Especially considering that countries can print their own money

Why do humans have to "pay" for food, water, electricty when those are earth bound natural resources and should be free. Life in the prehistoric days was free and working a job was non existent. For example collecting rain water in many places is illegal the same goes for hunting and fishing unless you pay a fee for some type of license but why when it should be free?

Human nature wouldn't allow it. We're inherently greedy and if we didn't have limitation, we'd all want everything we can get our hands on.

Hunting has to be regulated or there would be a mass extinction.

You can grow your own fruits and vegetables cheap.

Electricity is not cheap. Power grids, power lines need upkeep. Electricity is not simple as it looks.

And who do you expect to do the jobs then? You think people will get up every morning and go to work for no reason?

Life would be unfulfilling if you didn't have to work to live. This only works when you're a child, because you still have your innocence, and ignorance is bliss.

Because money without anything backing it is just paper/coins.

In the prehistoric days, you worked your ass off all day to hunt and gather food. It wasn't free, you risked your life to get food and struggled to get by. Then, when people began to actually use agriculture, other people started focusing on other professions to contribute to society, but would still need a way to "earn" food. Likewise, farmers would need a way to "earn" services, and thus money was made so that we have a universal good to exchange for food and services. The world you're describing where food and such are free has never been a reality because it can't exist.

Well, people have already said it, but if there was no currency system, then people would feel entitled to everything without giving anything in return. Now, there could be an argument for a "bartering" system, but that's an archaic system that just wouldn't work in the fast-paced world we live in.

Our current currency system isn't perfect, but it has its purpose and is much needed.

EDIT: Post above me said it better. Our current currency system is effectively an evolution to the bartering system.

When it comes to a 99% of stuff we need and want, they exist in limited amounts. People can criticize capitalism as much as they want, and I do recognize it has its fails when taken from theory to practice, HOWEVER, when things are priced, that price reflects their abundance or scarcity. Without goods and services being priced, we would consume them carelessly and run out of them in the blink of an eye. The price not only makes us aware of either their abundance, scarcity (or whether they are needs or wants), on top of that, you need to work for your money to pay that price, which in time delays the process of running out of it, and helps balance the supply of it.

If everything is free, no one will work hard to earn anything. So basically people stop working and it's gonna be the end of the world.

Anyhow, it's crazy to think how the concept of money as we know it today is so recent. Mankind entered the 20th century with some of the biggest nations lacking an official currency, and with exchanges still being very precarious and on a case-to-case basis rather than a fixed value.

I think I see a ad a few weeks ago that some countries in Europe have a 35 hour work week or 4 days work, 3 days off type thing.
