Streaming is killing tangible forms of media to a degree, and normal promotion patterns aren't as effective as they used to be.
Bubblegum pop music isn't selling well, and the usual staples of the radio are having a hard time transitioning to a stream-heavy platform while attempting to change their sound to match what's popular.
Things will level out in a few years, but right now I think the main pop girls need to be creative in how they approach promotion, and aim for a more viral approach, rather than the traditional "promote on GMA/Today Show/SNL/VMAs/Grammys/etc ec"

I agree.
These programs are becoming more irrelevant with time and promoting on these platforms is not just not as effective.
The main pop music audience - young people - spend way more time on internet and glued to their phones on social media apps etc.
Also, the already established ones like Beyonce, Rihanna, Taylor, Adele aren't having problems.
The newer ones like Ariana and Selena are never going to become that big, they'll just have a few hits here and there and continue to have huge teen following on social media.
As for others - we can't be sure about Katy until her new era begins. Britney has been over as a major popstar for a while, so no surprise she underperformed. GaGa's days are apparently over too. So all popgirls can't be clubbed together.
