At this point, Hillary Clinton shouldn't apologize, but she needs to hone her comment. A generalization won't help, but a specific critique of Trump's supporter base could be very effective.

Those early voters are most certainly not fir Trump. Hillary's basically got NC on lock. A good ground game DOES matter and Trump doesn't have one.

We're now arguing the exact percentage of Trump supporters who are bigots. Apparently Hillary has been using this line for weeks, but this was the first time she invited press into the fold. The more I think about it the more I believe it was intentional. Still a risk, but a calculated one.

First of all, if I recall correctly, we've only ever had two exchanges. One was this deplorable comment and the other was when you inaccurately claimed Hillary was being silent and not campaigning heavily enough when I told you that she would be intense after Labor Day. I was right because I actually am aware of a traditional campaign strategy.

Don't underestimate early voting. Over 60% of total votes will come before election day. It can be critical especially in close races. Hillary has the momentum, reliable voters, ad buy, and ground game going into these critical weeks. She can win NC if she turns out people now before bad news potentially come out late October.

Also, this is the most positive reaction I've seen re: Hillary from the black activist crowd on my Facebook since, well, ever. This comment galvanizes Trumpkins, but it galvanizes the traditional Dem base as well.

Honestly it was a dumb comment by her. Was she right? Probably. But she needs to be seen as the calm and collected one and not engage in insults of this caliber, aka no substance, with Trump.

Her calling some of his supporters racists and providing receipts (as she did in her tv ads) is one thing and is very good, but her just saying half of his supporters are bigots without any proof is not good

Rather you agree with the comment or not, I think we can agree that we're now having a discussion again on the atmosphere of the campaigns instead of EMAILS, BIRTHERISM, FOUNDATION.

I wasn't a fan of the comment, mostly because "basket of deplorables" is such a weird turn of phrase. But how is this different from the running theme her campaign has pushed about him catering to racists? The comment was essentially an abbreviated pointed version of the alt-right speech (which was largely ignored by the press). I don't know that she should pretend it didn't happen...with Obama on the trail I think she can build on it with the birther stuff, and her surrogates need to get on TV citing those polls saying how many Trump supporters believe Obama was born in Kenya, that blacks are violent, etc.

But it's a risk because the press could shorthand it as "Hillary says all Trump supporters are awful people" which sounds awful. Also, those suburban white women who have Trump supportinf husbands surely won't appreciate their spouses being called deplorable. That group is really the only group that can potentially be swayed here.

What's your running theory - that this will turn off the people on the fence? If those people were "on the fence" about even remotely considering supporting a sociopathic, bigoted narcissist to begin with than it's wasted energy, time and $ even trying to appeal to them - Hillary figures she might as well lay it all out just like Trump does with his "hatred of political correctness". It's not "sinking to his level" but calling it the way she she's it. I happen to think what she implied IS factual but that's a separate conversation.

It's down to turning on her base now to get out and VOTE - there's no point attempting to pivot to voters any longer that blame their problems not on globalism but they fact that they lost their job in coal country due to a black president who they think is a terrorist sympathizer that was "really born in Kenya".

Frankly I'm just glad that SOMEONE is calling the spade a spade. First addressing the alt-right movement and now this. I seen too many people passive on Trump's supporters racism. And we all been outraged by a year of "Trumpism"; I think Hillary can afford to call out people (rightfully) since the media won't.

It also revealed to me that some of our left "allies" had really fallen off the deep end. So unnerving and embarrassing to see many people that supported Bernie defend Trump/supporters racism. Almost make me glad to see that Hillary is the nominee and not Bernie.

I consider anyone that supports Trump to be a deplorable person.

i cannot wait until this election is over with. it has become a joke. our government is a joke too. we have a do-nothing congress because the GOP doesn't want to work with a black democrat president. the fact that they won't even confirm a new SC justice is just crazy.
