Flights were cancelled at London’s City airport after nine protesters from Black Lives Matter UK got on to the runway and chained themselves together to protest air pollution's impact on black people.
The campaign said it carried out the protest to highlight the environmental impact of air travel on the lives of black people locally and globally.
"Climate crisis is a racist crisis. 7/10 of the countries most affected by climate change are in sub-Saharan Africa," the Black Lives Matter UK Twitter account wrote.
"By 2050 there will be 200 million climate refugees. Black people are the first to die, not the first to fly, in this racist climate crisis. Climate crisis is a racist crisis. Cut emissions. Open borders. #Shutdown."
The group said that air travel allows a "wealthy elite" to fly around the world while "migrants drown in the Mediterranean".
