Georgetown to offer slave descendants preferential admission
http://money.cnn.com/2016/09/01/pf/c...ts-admissions/
In an effort to acknowledge its ties to slavery, Georgetown University will offer the descendants of nearly 300 slaves preferential treatment in its admissions process.
Quote:
In 1838, the school sold 272 slaves who were working on plantations in southern Maryland to pay down its debts.
Now, the school said it will give the descendants of those slaves "the same consideration we give members of the Georgetown community" when they apply. That means that the applicants will "receive an extra look" and that their relationship to the university will be considered.
|
Quote:
"We must acknowledge that Georgetown participated in the institution of slavery. There were slaves here on the hilltop until emancipation in 1862."
Georgetown will also have a Mass of Reconciliation where it will apologize for its history.
|
Quote:
Maxine Crump, whose great, great grandfather was among those sold in 1838, told CNN's Brooke Baldwin that she was overcome when she heard about the news.
"I was driving at the time, and I felt like my car was going but I had stopped. It just took over my whole being. It was a door that opened that I never expected would have opened in my life.
Along with the admissions treatment, the school will create a memorial to honor the 272 enslaved men, women and children, create the Institute of Slavery and its Legacy, and also rename two buildings that had been named after the presidents who facilitated the 1838 sale.

I'm extremely annoyed by this...so if I have made A's in all my 12 years of going to school, and I've always dreamed of going to the University of Georgetown, you telling me somebody could get my spot with a low B or C average over something that happened almost 200 years ago???
I'm sure Maxine was happy...you getting in undeserved over somebody else that could of worked harder than you to get into college. That doesn't change what happened to Maxine's great, great Grandfather...
...oh so using that logic: I should free land, and a house in North Carolina because my Native American ancestors were death marched to Oklahoma, right?

So they're giving 300 people the same preferential treatment given every year to people who happen to be born in Georgetown? Why doesn't that annoy you? This is one little school.. do you know how many white students are given special treatment to top schools because their grandparents or parents were privileged enough to attend them? Also, your grades won't matter in any school when standing next to a star athlete.

This is so silly, they weren't slaves so they don't deserve anything above what other people get but its not exactly surprising that this is happening.

That's different...for example, state schools have less tuition for in state students, than out of state students, but that doesn't exclude people based on race like this Georgetown nonsense is...and they don't give athletic scholarships because of good grades.
How it's worded, a Georgetown slave descendant could live up in Alaska and get in over a person with better grades...that is not fair, imo. Colleges should accept the best students based on academic merit alone.

Good for them! And good for those descendants who now have a chance for a better education!

You already know that's not what most do, so why get mad at this.
Do something productive like protest that your tuition isn't going to better programs or paying academic staff, but some football coach taking trips to Europe to pamper some exchange students to get them to play on their team. Of all the ****ery US colleges do in exploiting people, this is.... so insignificant and shows someone who doesn't get what they're addressing.

Hmm, you're way too bitter, but who am I to tell you how to feel. There are other schools out there if the policies of this one school piss you off so much.
And for the record, out of all the minorities oppressed in this country, Native American and Japanese Americans have received more from the government than African Americans, who have received nothing.
It's always a problem when they try to do something for the one community that built this ****ing nation up from the ground, unwillingly.

Well it's an imperfect solution to a complex problem but I don't have a better one... so.

Hun lets get something straight. It is not your spot until Georgetown sends you an acceptance letter. So this entitlement thing you got going, you can end that right here. With an attitude like this you don't even deserve to be accepted. Also it's stupid to get mad at the descendants of slaves taking your non-existent spot but you're not mad at the legacies, the athletes, the child of high profile people, etc...who could also possibly take your non-existent spot.

Who cares if they weren't slaves? Because of slavery they are still suffering from the consequences of it.
Besides, this is no better than white people getting preferential treatment because of their family members being apart of this school.

And people have to realize this whole meritocracy thing is a white version of affirmative action. It assumed that all races have had the same economic and educational opportunities growing up so their grades are a full reflection of who they are. That's not true. Whites are much more likely to better opportunities and therefore would be more likely to get into their schools if it's based on grades only. It's not equal for all people, especially latinos and blacks

It's only fine if it works like said in the bold.
In other cases, people are to be judged only by their knowledge and not their ancestors background in admission.

Progress! This is great and necessary! Now many others need to follow suit! And how about those reparations?

It helps exactly who the policy is designed for, so let's not play that angle.
And I applaud Georgetown for making an effort to reconcile its history and give an opportunity to the progeny of those that built and sustained it.
