Girl, it's a shortened nickname. Because it's not just USA it's United States of
America. Obviously there's the continents of North America and South America, but people use that as a nickname for USA. It's not because of some ego. It's because it's literally the best descriptive word to use as a shortened nickname of sorts because our country name isn't that easy to just roll off the tongue like Mexico or Canada. It really ain't that deep.
People never usually use the word America when referring to the entire continent or countries within the continent because it's incorrect. The correct term would be using North or South before it. Just like in the US we don't say Carolina to refer to someone from either North or South Carolina. We say North Carolina or South Carolina.
And to answer the question, no America is not a continent.
