These two videos kind of showcase the difference between Brazilian & European Portuguese. Even the way each country pronounces Português is different.



The reason why I made this thread is because seeing as a person can travel to Spain from Latin America (and vice versa) and not have any issues communicating, I always wondered if it was possible for Brazilian & European Portuguese speakers to do the same without any major issues in communication. Both are beautiful countries that I'd love to go to someday.

It is. One of my friends is from Portugal, my boyfriend is from Brazil, and they speak in Portuguese to each other.

Yep, they're very similar languages, even more than Spanish/Portuguese.

I believe it's the same as French (France) and Canadian French, the accent isn't the same, some words don't have the same meaning and there are some words that are still used (despite a change in the meaning) in one and not in the other; but despite it all, the language is still the same and you can still understand each other.

Or American English and British English ?

It's not that different. It's just that the Brazilian pronunciation and accent is more sing-song and will make you make you fall to your knees and do what you are meant to

Europeu Portuguese is more Slavic sounding, but you can still understand it.

African Portuguese is more neutral than the other two. That's the one!

One sounds like Russian Spanish and the other is pleasant to the ears.

We don't need to change anything while speaking to one another, I perfectly understand my Brazillian friends and they understand me perfectly even tho the accents are different. There are some expressions and words that are used more commonly in one country than the other but it's pretty much all the same

I was taught Brazilian Portuguese but I met this Portuguese author and I was able to understand him fine. European Port sounds rougher though, but European Port is probably easier to understand if you already speak Spanish rather than Brazilian Port.

Very interesting. It sounds like such a beautiful language that I'd love to learn and have always wondered if I can communicate with people from both countries with Portuguese spoken in Portugal.

Brazilian and Portuguese language are kinda similiar, but the accents, pronunciation and tones are almost completly diferent. Plus, Brazilian Portuguese is strongly influenced by African, Native, Spanish, Middle Eastern, Italian, English, French and German and Slavic languages' pronunciation and tones, depending the region you live.

I much prefer Brazilian Portuguese, and that's the one I learn.

They're actually not that similar. Some Portuguese tv shows have subtitles in Brazil.

Well said for French. However, lots of slang developed in both countries and those are totally distinct too.

Also, don't you guys have France French subtitles when watching Quebec movies/tv shows. We have the same sometimes too, although we don't get a lot of France tv shows or movies that get popular or shown.

With pronunciation, it's all about the e's at the end of words and how they're pronounced. "EE" (Brazil) vs "UH" (Portuguese).

Then '-te/ti' and '-di/de' being "chi" and "ji" in Brazil.

In French who "opens their mouth more"? Who has rounder vowels?

In Spanish and Portuguese, it's the Americas.
