will.i.am went solo after The Beginning and released his album #willpower April 2013 and beside that Fergie started her family and got her son Axl. After that Fergie also decided to work on a new solo album and released a handful of solo songs like A Little Party Never Killed Nobody, Feel Alive which were both for soundtracks and L.A. Love.
Last year BEP was supposed to release a 20 year anniversary project, the project was supposed to start like the group started with just the 3 guys involved. They released the song as visual exclusive to Apple Music called Yesterday. There were a lot of rumors that Fergie was gonna be replaced and everyone from CL to Nicole Scherzinger have been named as replacement. But will.i.am stated Fergie would join in at some point for the project.
During that time, they also changed management as BEP and signed with Scooter braun. No official reasons have been given why nothing further happened with the Anniversary project. But most likely it was because of Fergie's solo plans.
In the meantime will.i.am released Boys & Girls as solo single with Pia Mia and Fergie restarted her solo era for her new album Double Dutchess, and released the song MILF $ recently.
I feel this new Where is the Love? version could be a continuation of that 20 year anniversary project.
