Definitely tolerated, which is sadly as much as we can hope / expect in this day. I got bullied in high school, and it took me a year to come out to my colleagues who were fortunately fine. But you just don't know - the true meaning of "coming out" is so stupid, of course the only important one is coming out to YOURSELF and having your friends and family support.
Then you've got everyone you meet for the rest of your life, well everyone you want to be truly open and honest with. Ideally they wouldn't expect you to be straight, but sadly they do and that clarification is significant still.
