As early as later this year or starting of next year, depending on when it actually becomes a law! One of the things that will go into effect just 6 months after enactment is that children will no longer be denied due to pre-existing conditions. It will probably take until 2014 for everyone to be covered similarly.

I'm still baffled as to why the US didn't deal with this in the 1950s like...the entire rest of the western world did. I'm sure they would have something akin to NHS or Medicare Canada/Assurance-Maladie in place.

Proud that in 1948 the NHS came into affect. This was 3 years after the war we may not have the best system in the world but it works for us.

Were 18th in the world for best healthcare. America is ranked 37th. They may all be private and look like hotels but at least here in the UK EVERYONE gets healthcare.

This new healthcare bill won't cover everyone but its a steping stone in the right direction. Once the dusts settles everyone will thank Obama for this. Morally Healthcare is a right for all IMO.

Every country in the indurstrialised world has there own diffrent healthcare plan. France is number one so their model works the best. We clearly need to improve our NHS but I know we can do it.

People blame Margerat Thacther govement for the mess its in now. This Labour govement which should be the govement of the people has done little to improve it. Yes they cut waiting lists. The main problem is the budget. This needs to be sorted out.

Too many people are against a complete universal health care system. You won't see it in your lifetime. The only way you might see it in your lifetime is if this current legislation that passed turns into a huge success, then maybe we will revisit universal health care in 10 years.

Of course I know it won't happen now, but I wish I could really know what Americans in the 1940s/1950s thought about the developments with healthcare in Canada, the UK, and France. I know that American Medicare was created in the 1950s/1960s, but of course that's very far from Medicare Canada and NHS. I don't know if Americans were against it then. The mentalities of the two parties in the US were very different sixty years ago. The claims that some Republicans make as an argument against social medicine wouldn't have been available then since it was too new to analyse the differences between the American system and the social ones. In addition I don't know any Americans who lived as adults through the 1950s, so I wouldn't know what people were thinking back then.

Here an example of an waiting list. My Aunt is on an NHS waiting list for heaet sugery. She has an hole in her heart since birth and only started giving her problems now as it has grown now she is booked in for surgery in Aprill. Not bad is it. If she was in America she would be in trouble as she could not afford insurance and is too rich for medicare.
