House passes health care bill on 219-212 vote

Washington (CNN) -- The House of Representatives has passed a sweeping $875 billion health care reform bill. The measure, which cleared the Senate in December, will now head to President Obama's desk to be signed into law.

The bill passed in a 219-212 vote. All 178 Republicans opposed it, along with 34 Democrats.

The House still is expected to vote on compromise changes to the Senate bill, which, should the changes pass the House, still would need Senate approval. However, Obama's signature on the main Senate health care bill would make the reform the law of the land, with or without the changes in the accompanying bill.

A last-minute deal Sunday between Obama and House members who oppose abortion appeared to clear the way for Congress to pass the bill.

Just a few hours before the vote, Obama announced he would issue an executive order to ensure that existing limits on federal funding of abortion remain in place under the health care reform bill. Minutes later, Rep. Bart Stupak, D-Michigan, and fellow anti-abortion colleagues said they would support the legislation.

On the news over here in the UK they been talking about your healthcare bill. I don't get why a lot of Americans don't like the idea of universal healthcare when every industrialised country has a form if it.

I would like to hear your opinions as British I don't understand whats going on.

i have healthcare for all is the best idea. Iremeber hearing a debate thing, have this american said that on the nhs steven hawkins would of died. But its because of the nhs that he is still alive, on the america health system he would be dead because he couldnt of afford the treatment. And he british anway so i dont get what the guy was going on about lol.

Many Americans are concerned that if we make health care available to everyone it will result in higher taxes for us all. The majority of Americans are insured and many of them don't feel like it's their responsibility to pay for someone else's health care. Also, many people are afraid that there is not enough capacity in the medical industry to handle all of this because many people will abuse these "free" services by using them too often or for minor issues.

All in all, the whole pharmaceutical industry in our country is corrupt and has a reputation for inventing fake syndromes just so they can invent and sell more high-margin placebo drugs. A lot of tea-party Republicans think these pharmaceutical companies will share profits with politicians so that they enact this health care bill (which would help companies sell even more drugs and prescriptions). I'm not sure if I'm 100% accurate but I think this is what all the controversy is about.

Really they don't relise how much cheaper it is over here. Because the NHS is payed for by every tax payer the cost is spread out. Its not FREE service everyone pays. To think how much a single persons has to pay in america to get healthcare.

I heard people have lied about therre medical history to get health insurance.

People over here like the fact that if they fall ill they won't have to added stress off how I going to pay for my medical bills.

I advise you to watch the movie Sicko by Michael Moore, it really explains what's wrong with health care in the United States and talks about the health care system in the U.K., Canada, France, and Cuba.

Because honestly there is too much to be discussed about the system in the U.S.

45,000 people die every year in the U.S. just because they don't have health insurance. And the # of uninsured is really unknown but is thought to be anywhere between 40-55 million people that don't have any coverage.

Liberals in the U.S. want a free universal health care system like France and feel in the long term it will save lives and money.

Conservatives in the U.S. don't want anything at all to do with health care reform at all and will stop at nothing to end it (Why? I really don't know to be honest with you. They say it's too expensive and ignore the fact people are going bankrupt trying to pay medical bills)

The worst part about it is that both parties are wrong. The bill they are putting together now (which is kind of a compromise) is actually a pretty good idea and I think it will work.

Yeah, both sides are too extreme on what they want. We need something in the middle.
