why do people hate this concept, why do they feel threatened

I agree that people should have equal rights, but equality between all individuals does not exist and never will. It is a flawed concept.

After experiencing advantages all their lives or for a large part of it, people don't like to suddenly have to work harder for certain things they took for granted before.
