Pretend you’re back in 2007 and someone tells you that in 10 years, Britney Spears will be in the midst of a career resurgence — while the Internet is celebrating the second Twitter takedown of Justin Timberlake in two months.
First you might ask, what’s “Twitter”? Also, you wouldn’t believe it.
Ten years later, Spears — who will perform at the VMAs on Sunday for the first time since that 2007 incident — has built up a huge amount of goodwill. The world that watched her breakdown has cheered her careful comeback over the years, as she’s had a slew of popular songs (her ninth album, “Glory,” is released today) and a hit residency in Las Vegas. It’s the classic “road to redemption” narrative, and Spears has flourished.
But [Timberlake], the former so-called “teflon man,” has received an increasing amount of criticism for his treatment of Spears, whom he dated for three years.
That criticism culminated in a widely-circulated Buzzfeed article on Aug. 19 titled “Dear Justin Timberlake, Just F—ing Stop.” Reporter Matt Stepora tore into Timberlake for exhaustively using his 2002 breakup with Spears to play the victim and boost his career.
It fueled the hashtag #JTExposedParty, given the Buzzfeed story was apparently inspired by Timberlake not-so-subtly mentioning Spears in a recent interview with Vanity Fair Italia. “In the past, suffering helped me to compose [songs]. ‘Cry Me a River’ was written in a moment of pain, and the whole world knew,” Timberlake said, alluding to his famous Spears break-up song.
In true Taylor Swiftian coy style, he’ll never confirm it’s about Spears. But everyone knows it’s Spears, and he’s referred to her in many interviews. Now, some people are officially tired of this behavior — especially as it always ensures another wave of publicity that throws Spears under the bus.
For some, seeing Timberlake finally getting called out in a big way this summer was thrilling, writer Elaine Lui called it “sweet vindication/validation.”
“As you know, I have been dragging those ringlets for years,” Lui wrote, poking fun at Timberlake’s boy band hairstyle. “For being the original Taylor Swift. For making every moment about himself. For abandoning Janet Jackson #NeverForget. And, yes, for climbing to fame on the back of one Britney Jean Spears.”

There's been so many ISIS attacks, and floods, and earthquakes this year,

Doubt Justin is bothered, didn't he just have a multi platinum hit this year that went #1 everywhere? That single that is still charting higher than any of Britney's singles will this era. People are still here for Justin, and when he releases his album it will outsell Glory

I don't know about that because a lot of people are blind and don't know the real BTS stuff, but he has got himself in some few situations like the #AllLivesMatter thing. He also underestimates Social Media and its power. Anyone (if they want) can see how many times he talks about Britney Spears now instead of like 2004 where you really couldn't guess a count due to the nature of celebrity back then.

Justin's appeal is marginal to me at best, but I never get the point of what he always drop's Britney's name at the drop of a hat. It's been 14 years, doesn't he have a wife and child now. What does he get out of mentioning her every single time he has something to promote. They ended in 2002, why is he still crying over Britney.
I remember one poster said that he probably has Jessica dress up in old Britney costumes, and he probably does.

This is 100% true. I don't think Justin Timberlake has acclimated to the new world of social media and the impact it can have on his career; he's still living in 2002—which is obvious, since he keeps bringing up his breakup with Britney Spears. Timberlake still thinks he can say what he wants about Spears and get away with it, since he's been doing it (and getting away with it) for so many years. But just as you've stated, Brinny, in today's world, during the Age of Intenet, every single thing you've said in an interview or in a magazine, et cetera, can be pulled up. Furthermore, social media is even currently getting racists and douches fired from their jobs for their posts. In conclusion, Justin Timberlake better COOL IT with ever mentioning Britney Spears or All Lives Matter, in the future.

I agree with this article. He definitely needs to be held accountable for somethings (especially Nipplegate).
Though I don't see how his #11 debut song is all that bad. It's not like that song wasn't popular or anything.

While I'm certainly no fan of Ms. Spears, Mr. Timberlake is even more insufferable. Britney is a sweetheart and has been through so much. Why would he even think to elude to her? He's so cringe lately
