Well, with my experience of them, safe spaces don't encompass an entire campus. They might be certain faculty offices, organizations, departments, etc. You aren't completely sectioned off from the variety of viewpoints that form society. It's just about having a place of refuge where you aren't questioned, judged, undermined, or threatened on account of your identity. This is highly relevant for the LGBT community.
