News: Italy Earthquake Deaths rises to 247 as 1000s left displaced

The European Mediterranean Seismological Centre put the magnitude at 6.1 and said the epicentre was northeast of Rome, near Rieti. The US Geological Survey put the magnitude at 6.2.

The mayor of Amatrice near Rieti, Sergio Perozzi, told state-run RAI Radio 1 that there were downed buildings in the city centre and that the lights had gone out. He said he was unable to get in touch with emergency responders or reach the hospital.

"What can I tell you? It's a tragedy," he said.

Aftershocks are still being felt across the whole of central Italy all the way to Naples and Foggia and with people reportedly in the streets in Florence.

USGS's PAGER system, which predicts the impact of earthquakes, has issued a red alert - suggesting significant casualties and damage based on previous quake data. So far, however, no casualties have been reported.

A resident of the Rieti region, which is between Rome and the epicentre of the quake, told the Rainews24 channel that she and most of her neighbours had come out onto the street after feeling "very strong shaking."

I live in the north (my town was built on grounds that make it virtually impossible to feel an earthquake) but right now I'm in Rimini in Central Italy on the coast and we did feel something, even though there was no damage here. Still, it saddens me to see entire towns destroyed - unfortunately this part of Italy is highly subject to earthquakes, and being very ancient it lacks earthquake-proof infrastructure
