Except for the brief AIDS mentions, I never saw Madonna do much for the pride movement before Lady Gaga.

In fact, Madonna used the homophobic "F" word in her documentary.

“I wouldn’t hire f**s that hate women,” she announced in Truth or Dare. “I kill f**s that hate women."



Lady Gaga started a revolution by attending and walking Pride events, giving speeches and directing them at the president, calling governors to stop Dont Ask Dont Tell and recording the first #1 single to include the words "gay bisexual lesbian transgender".

After Gaga normalized it, Madonna suddenly started speaking up more about gay rights for the first time since late 80s/early 90s. Before that, she was married to a homophobe Guy Richie who got exposed by Madonna's brother. Gay rights weren't really on Madonna's radar until Gaga. She simply used them for money, but didn't do anything to fight for their rights like Gaga.

Madonna made them strong, gays could express themselves, they could stand up for what they believe in and show who they are, get informed about sex and AIDS/HIV. It was a time when people finally got information, they could come out and be stronger and more confident than ever. "dont go for second best"
But it came naturally. Madonna didnt push to be a gay icon, the gays came to her, and she always had gay people in her life (her brothers, her famly, her gay dance teacher, her pre fame dancers..) and she decided to inform the public about what she knows.

Kylie gave them some extra glam, something sweet and a little more conventional for those who are not as in your face.

Gaga made them victims, weak, bullies, and losers who cry every day. She made them believe they need her, and if shes not successful, they failed. Think about that.

She put a pamphlet in all the Like a prayer albums that gave information about safe sex. She donated all the money for MANY of her concerts of the Who's That Girl tour, Blond Ambition Tour, Girlie Show, and others to research for HIV/aids. NO ONE did that at the time. All the former dancers of truth or dare PRAISED madonna in a new documentary for doing what she did for the gay community. I could write many paragraphs about all the things she's done, all the groundwork she did that you, as a horrible person and gaga fan try to belittle, try to pretend didn't happen. but you're not gonna win this, you can't change history.
