They'll probably make her do "TiK ToK." I really hope she does "Blah Blah Blah," though. Orianthi needs to take this time and announce a second single, but she'll perform "According to You." I don't know what David Cook will be doing. Probably a cover like Kris, Matt, and Scott did. If I were him, I would be premiering a new song and then releasing it to iTunes immediately after.

Orianthi: Bringing the axe to 'American Idol'

Many people got their first look at Orianthi when she played guitar behind Carrie Underwood on the 2009 Grammy Awards telecast.

Tonight, they'll see her again, as the 25-year-old Australian singer and guitarist performs her hit According to You on the American Idol results show. Orianthi, whose friends call her Ori ("It's much easier," she says) will be one of three performers on the show, along with David Cook and Ke$ha. "It'll be great to meet with all the contestants," she says. "That'll be awesome."

Though Orianthi already was making a name for herself in guitar circles, the gig with Carrie opened a lot of doors, including one that led to an offer from Michael Jackson.

"Michael saw the video of me jamming with Carrie and her band," Orianthi says. "Michael Bearden, his musical director, was looking for a female guitar player. He asked around and my name came back to him four or five times. He showed that video to Michael, and Michael said he loved my playing and wanted me to come in a play for him."

She never got to play a concert with Michael, though she's featured prominently in the film This Is It.

Orianthi, who is managed by 19 Entertainment, also played the guitar solo on Adam Lambert's Sleepwalker.

"I'm a big fan of Adam's voice," she says, adding that Ryan Tedder, who producer and co-wrote the track, invited her to play on it. "I actually went over to Colorado and recorded it at his studio. I love the track. It's really moody."

Orianthi's watching this season of Idol when she can. Naturally, she has taken special note of Casey James, another guitar player. "He was really cool," she says.

As someone making the transition from side musician to frontwoman, Orianthi offers the following advice for Casey, or any other performer trying to learn to balance playing and singing: "I'm such a big guitarhead and listen to a lot of instrumental music. But when I was making my record, I wanted to find the right balance with the guitar playing and making sure I didn't do too much for the song but did what's best for the song. People who listen to the radio are not all guitar players, so you can't fill all the gaps in with guitar playing."

Orianthi's album Believe, produced by Howard Benson, came out last October and included According to You. Here's her latest video, an instrumental duet with guitarist Steve Vai called Highly Strung.
