Oh I agree. There was no way they were gonna give her a 3rd so soon after her second, especially not for a movie that turned AMPAS off. They weren't looking to give Carol any awards.

She should, though. To the best of my knowledge, she's still tied to the Aaron Sorkin-penned Lucille Ball biopic. So, she may get a third Oscar sooner than we think.

The number of years between their first Oscar win and their third Oscar win:
Katherine Hepburn (35 years) / (48 years between her first and fourth)
Meryl Streep (32 years)
Ingrid Bergman (30 years)
Daniel Day-Lewis (23 years)
Jack Nicholson (22 years)
----
Walter Brennan (4 years)
Day-Lewis and Streep will probably get their fourth faster than Hepburn did. It's hard to imagine neither of them ever winning again, so it feels safe to assume that they
will get a fourth.
An incomplete list of living actors with two Oscars (years they won / number of years since their first):
Maggie Smith (69, 78) / 57 yrs
Jane Fonda (71, 78) / 45 yrs
Sally Field (79, 84) / 37 yrs
Jessica Lange (82, 94) / 34 yrs
Jodie Foster (88, 91) / 28 yrs
Hillary Swank (99, 04) / 17 yrs
Cate Blanchett (04, 13) / 12 yrs
No woman has ever won her third Oscar less than thirty years after winning her first, but if anyone in film has the chance to change that it's definitely Cate Blanchett. I really think she'll do it. I can't really imagine her having a twenty year dry spell.
She's my absolute favorite actress (along with Maggie Smith), so I hope she does it!
As for the men...
Robert De Niro (74, 80) / 42 yrs
Dustin Hoffman (79, 88) / 37 yrs
Michael Caine (86, 99) / 30 yrs
Denzel Washington (89, 01) / 27 yrs
Tom Hanks (93, 94) / 23 yrs
Kevin Spacey (95, 99) / 21 yrs
Sean Penn (03, 08) / 13 yrs
Christoph Waltz (09, 12) / 7 yrs
Tom Hanks and Denzel Washington are both comfortably in the 20 year range that Day-Lewis and Nicholson had between their first and third, but if I had to guess I'd say Denzel will get his third before Tom (assuming either ever get a third). Tom Hanks has starred in something like 6 Best Picture nominees this century without getting an acting nomination, which doesn't really bode well for him. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that he won his Oscars back-to-back...?
