I read in cracked that this is a survivival mechanism against those patterns, since they are related to poisonous or dangerous animals.

Is the fear because the little holes resemble a close up of skin pores in some ways? I've seen really nasty pics like this of fingers and hands, but with inanimate objects it doesn't bother me.
