On My Mind is a horrible excuse for a pop song. I think it's her chalkboard'd voice mostly. In conjunction with the Maroon 5 piss poor production it just does not work for her. She needs to tunnel on back to introspective indie pop.
Ellie's mistake was thinking she was pretty or engaging enough as a performer/vocalist/persona to become a huge force. LMLYD was a hit because of the film (and the song itself is catchier and more universal than anything on Delusion). Her Halcyon success was as good as it was going to get for her, she might as well have retained her dignity and made more songs like "My Blood" instead of going all Taylor-lite.
I hope she pulls through. I mean, wearing a BDSM'd mask in the album cover obviously isn't doing wonders for her universal appeal. , I see her being the kind of artist that will be wonderful in her 25-35 range.
I think her image is still a bit off putting to some, her image during the ME was a perfect mix of cute and sexy but the imagery for DW has been all over the place quality wise I know she'll deliver again, her music is only going to better with each release.
Kendrick doing that Bad Blood verse but retaining his indie and urban credibility was impressive.
'Black Lives Matter privilege' is a thing in the music industry nowadays (see also: Lemonade inexplicably having a 90+ on Metacritic).
It immunizes from criticism, accentuates the positive, and hides the negative.
Didn't Ellie flop despite creating like the best pop song of the year with LMLYD? Karma's a bitch.
While Ed Sheeran sold 8.5m copies of his album (adjusting for market share it was bigger than any Prince, George Michael, Justin Timberlake or Backstreet Boys album).
