All-Female Ocean's Eleven Reboot: "Ghostbusters teas?"
Quote:
We have a bone to pick with the movie industry.
...it was reported by Deadline that the previously-rumored all-female Ocean's Eleven reboot is a go. E! News can confirm that Warner Brothers is moving along and has set an October start date for filming. And on top of that, they've firmed up the cast as well, with Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Rihanna, Helena Bonham Carter, Mindy Kaling and hip hop artist Awkwafina set to star.

Of course, this all comes on the heels of this summer's slightly embattled but still very enjoyable all-female Ghostbusters reboot, proving that Hollywood is on the precipice of a new trend. We're going to start with the positives here: We loved Ghostbusters. The cast (Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Leslie Jones and Kate McKinnon) was a dream, and they definitively proved that having women take over didn't deter from the movie's quality at all. But nevertheless, we're still left wondering whether Ocean's Eight is a good idea.

Our trepidation has nothing to do with the cast or the filmmakers. This group of women, it goes without saying, is pretty awesome. They bring a mix of comedic wit and star power that we haven't seen in a movie in awhile. And Gary Ross, who is set to direct the spinoff, is also a plus—he's responsible for flicks like Seabiscuit and Hunger Games, among others. Our beef lies entirely with the fact that this is a reboot: Isn't it time for women to get their own original scripts?

Just imagine what that would be like! Instead of just reusing old all-male material for today's female actors, think what the world could be like if writers and directors were making brand new movies for women. It would be a world full of Bridesmaids. Or a world full of The Heat. That is a world we'd like to live in.
Or, better yet, if movies were simply made to be movies, regardless of whether a male or female actor ends up getting cast. Special magic happens when studios go in gender-blind and simply choose the best person for the job. Take Angelina Jolie in Salt—the gig was originally meant for Tom Cruise, but he passed and "Edwin Salt" became "Evelyn Salt." Or Sigourney Weaver in Alien, who went on to become one of the best movie heroes. Or, in the comedy realm, legend has it that Jane Lynch's character was originally meant to be male. It's a pretty inarguable fact that all of those parts turned out stellar.

Getting back to the reboot at hand, we think it goes without saying that we'll still line up at the movie theater to see this one. It's a testament to the strength of the Ocean's franchise that it's still going strong 15 years later. And it is still a step forward for women in film—it may not be the step that we'd like to see, but it's better than moving backwards.

They going to "try it" with this movie like they did with the all-female Ghostbusters...it's saving grace may be in the fact that "Oceans" is not ingrained in the pop culture lexicon like Ghostbusters is. But we know the critics are already getting their knives ready to rip Oceans Eight to pieces.
I don't see the big deal in getting the female perspective...I'm still waiting for a female James Bond...played by Priyanka Chopra to be exact.

It won't be like Ghostbusters because this seems like it will actually be a good movie.

No.
The casting is untouchable.
Anyone who dare come for Cate or Sandra will get ended.

Let's wait until the movie comes out, but come on, the cast is so much better!

This female cast is better, more entertaining and talented than any and all previous Oceans films TBH

The casts cannot be compared, Ocean 8 has one of the best casts in years, regardless of gender.
Ghostbusters was a good movie, but it didn't do wonders at the box office. People are still reluctant, so i think a gradual change towards more females/gender neutral roles is easier with reboots than original scripts.

The cast is uncomparable to the Ghostbusters cast and the script will be way better, I am sure so no this will not suffer the same backlash.

Other than Rihanna, the whole cast are incredible actors, so I think this will probably be a pretty strong and good film. I can't wait for it.

But the critics will try to marginalize it the same way they did the female Ghostbusters. I just hope this film (Oceans Eight) has its own stand alone identity.

The movie already is trash. Taylor is the only one who could save it

i'm not familiar with the movie. Will they all be bad-ass spies or something similar to Kill Bill?

I think so, like i said in another thread I wish they didn't present it as a "female version of", it's basically a heist done by women, no big deal, it doesn't even have to be linked to the Ocean's franchise. If they want to do a spin off, Soderbegh better produce

THR stated that they're gonna market it as a spin-off instead of a reboot.
It will not suffer the same backlash because 1) It isn't catered to fanboys 2) It has 4 Academy Award winning actresses 3) It actually has well-known boxoffice draws aka star power.
I'm sure they're already working on Ocean's 9 / 10. The fact that it's called Ocean's 8 screams spin-off trilogy

Actually, the critics did their best to "uplift" Ghostbusters. The public just wasn't here for it.

I almost say it would be better to name the film something else, as then it could be judged on it's own merits...not whether it's as good as the previous "Oceans" films.

Roger Ebert's website didn't...they only gave it 2 stars.
Ebert is like the "gold standard" in the critic world.
