Isn't Latin an obsolete language?

Italian, French, Spanish and Portuguese all come from Latin. Latin itself is not talked anymore. But I won't say it's an obsolete language. People all around the world learn it at University. In Europe even in High School, if you talk one of those languages born from Latin.
Latin is also very important for law degrees, because the whole law terminology is in Latin.
Anyway... Italians come from the Latins. The Latins were an italian population. So yes, we have Latin's roots, more than everybody else.
Latino, on the other end, is a term used to describe south americans (Latin America: because Romance languages [aka born from Latin itself] were brought there).
