Fatal Frame was one of the scariest survival horror video games of its time. Silent Hill and Resident Evil and their knock offs dominated the genre but FF was different. It made you look at your terrifying enemies in the face as the only way to defeat them and it was optional if not preferable to run and hide from them instead of fighting. Now in 2010s Resident Evil and Silent Hill have received the biggest backlashes in the franchise history for moving further and further away from the Survival Horror genre while games like Amnesia and Outlast receive great acclaim. These games are scary specifically because fighting back is almost impossible and just like in FF you have to face your ghosts, demons and monsters. The canceled Silent Hills Demo and the new RE demo also seem to be going by this formula.

So glad NintenGODs got the exclusivity rights to this iconic franchise that serves frequent quality (unlike Resident Evil) and is still alive (unlike Silent Hill).

Not too much on my faves. At least all 3 can serve actual horror on occasion unlike certain new blockbuster non zombie but still zombie apocalypse games.

I don't think they're the most influencial, but they're literally my favourite games. Running away wasn't a super prominent tactic in them though, the majority of ghosts you had to fight- I think something like Clock Tower is more influencial on that front.

But yeah, they're literally all great with the exception of 5 which is a disaster in a lot of ways (Also Spirit Camera is meh but it's a spin off). Fatal Frame 3 is actually the best game ever

I sped past most of the ghosts that always appeared in the same room and you had to run away from the bosses the whole game until the very end.

3 is indeed the best one and the Maiden of Blackwater was a tragedy in terms of story

Yes. RE is the more iconic franchise, but it's a slightly different genre. I was never scared from RE but I'm still SHOOK just thinking about opening certain doors in FF
